A common problem with air conditioners in Pickerington, Ohio is loss of refrigerant (R22 or R410) in the system. This causes the system to be less efficient, at best and no ac in the worst case. The system freezes up. This can be seen on the larger of the two copper lines coming into the house from the condenser (outdoor section). Or if the blower on the furnace is running and no air is coming out of the vents. These are signs of a malfunctioning system.

An HVAC system is a hermetically sealed unit. Kind of like your body, you only need blood if your cut. However, unlike the body an HVAC system can’t repair it’s self and/or make new refrigerant. The point is if you are low on refrigerant, you have a leak. Some companies will sell you stop leak and add freon. This is expensive, completely ineffective and a waste of money! Believe me I tried it for two years running and every system we touched ended up with the same issue within months if not weeks. Almost always the leak is in the evaporator coil, the coil above the furnace. The only repair is to replace it!

Here is where you need to understand your options for fixing your Air Conditioning or HVAC system:

1) Replace the coil and recharge with NU22 (much less costly than R22) or with R410 for a R410 system. Depending on the supplier you could pay from $1000 to $3500. We generally quote $1500. Now, only use this option if the rest of the system looks good! Or if you have a budget issue.

2) Replace the entire ac system. Depending on the size that could run $2000 to $6000. Generally we do them for $3000 to $3500 depending on size. This option gets you into a more efficient system with the newer R410A refrigerant. And a 10 year warranty.

3) The last option is to replace the entire HVAC system, heating and cooling. Depending on the model this could run over $15,000. Our flagship system runs about $7500. However, we do budget and investor system for under $5000.

Know your budget and weigh your options carefully! Don’t be penny wise and dollar foolish!
